A .58 RIMFIRE ROBERTS PATENT BREECH LOADING RIFLE SIGNED TOWER AND DATED 1863, serial number 4846 made by the Providence Tool Company of Providence Rhode Island, with 30 3/4in. barrel rifled with three grooves, fitted with a block and blade front-sight, and Enfield pattern ladder rear-sight, the barrel is also fitted with a bayonet lug near the muzzle, numbered "184" the action stamped "ROBERTS PAT / JUNE 11 1867", the borderline engraved lock of Enfield style stamped with a crown on the tail and "1863 / TOWER" to the centre, the action featured a tilting block similar to the Martini but operated by a top lever, regulation brass mounted full walnut stock, two iron barrel bands, complete with original rod. This system was invented by U.S. General Benjamin Roberts as a means to convert surplus Civil War rifle muskets into breech loaders, this example being converted from a P53. The system was not a success but France purchased a quantity during the Franco-Prussian war.
